small group FAQ’s
How do I join a Small Group?
You can join in a number
of ways; fill out the communication card on Sunday, or you can always
contact Rex Schultz to be placed into a group.
Who leads the Small Group?
One
advantage to Small Groups is that the focus is more on group discussion
than on lecturing through a lesson. Discussion brings everyone into the
group process and allows for the sharing of ideas and applications of
Scriptural truths. Great Bible teachers do not always make the best
facilitators. We look for people who can lead group discussions in such
a way that gets everyone involved (at least to their comfort level).
How many people do I need to start a Small Group?
Normally
3-5 people are enough to start a group. It gives the participants
plenty of opportunity for fellowship and allows room for growth.
What is the ideal size of a Small Group?
Jesus
spent three years with 12 disciples so that is a good number to shoot
for. Once you get beyond 12, it can be really hard to maintain good
group discussion without certain participants getting left out of the
discussion because of their quieter nature. If a group grows larger
than 12, the leader can then sub-group during the discussion. This also
allows for other facilitators to emerge from within the group and start
a new Small Group.
Where do Small Groups typically meet?
Groups can meet in any variety of places ranging from the church building, to a coffee shop, to someone’s home.
How long does a Small Group gathering usually last?
This
is flexible depending on the group’s needs and availability. Generally,
an ideal meeting time is about 90 minutes to 2 hours. This allows time
for fellowship, prayer concerns, and a time of group discussion without
feeling rushed to finish at a set time.
Where can I get study materials for my Small Group?
Materials
come in all shapes, sizes, topics, and formats. The key is to find a
material that will fit the needs of your group. Check with the Maturity
Pastor as we have some materials in the office and some studies that
others have done. You can also find materials on the SCC website
through Good Books Inc. and at our local Christian bookstores,
websites, and catalogues. Another good topic is the “going deeper”
questions formed around the Sunday sermon. This is a great way to bring
application from the preaching of God’s Word during worship.
